Frequently Asked Questions about the Emergency Aid Fund
What is it?
To prevent fellow students from having to drop out of their studies due to short-term financial difficulties, students can apply for emergency grants from the Student Body.
Who is it for?
KIT students who have unexpectedly fallen into a short-term financial emergency that jeopardizes the continuation of their studies.
Semester fees (in particular the tuition fees of 1,500 euros for international students) are not considered unforeseen by the committee and cannot be funded if their financing was not secured up until the emergency occurred.
How much?
In a personal meeting, the committee determines the individual needs of the applicant. The maximum funding amount per month corresponds to the maximum BAföG rate.
For how long?
Depending on need, the emergency grant can be awarded for up to two months with the first application. An extension by one further month is possible and requires an extension application. For funding for a third month, a new application must be submitted.
How does it work?
Fill out the application form (see below) and send it by email to notlagenhilfe@asta-kit.de. The AStA's Social Counseling Service will be happy to advise you when applying for emergency aid.
In the required personal statement, it is important to explain why the financial emergency occurred unexpectedly and at short notice.
Once your application has been received, the committee will review it and get in touch with you. In a joint meeting with the Allocation Committee, you will then have the opportunity to explain your situation in detail, answer the committee's questions and ask any questions of your own. As a rule, the Allocation Committee decides on your application following this meeting, and you will be informed of the decision immediately.
The committee commits itself to processing complete applications within one week.
What needs to be included in the application?
A signed application form, an overview of your financial situation with corresponding supporting documents, a description of the emergency and how it came about, and a valid certificate of enrollment. The application form includes a checklist where you can look up everything in detail.
Who is the Allocation Committee?
The committee is elected by the Student Parliament for a term of one year. All members are bound to confidentiality. If you know a member of the Allocation Committee personally and do not want that member to handle your case, you can easily exclude them on grounds of bias directly in your application. Anyone who is biased due to family ties or acquaintance receives no information about the application in question and cannot take part in the decision.
How does the Allocation Committee decide?
Decisions are made in a closed session based on the information in the application and your personal statement.
An application can only be approved if the financial emergency occurred unexpectedly and if you have not already received funds from the Student Body's Emergency Aid Fund within the last 18 months.
Who pays for it?
The Student Body, meaning all of us in solidarity, with a maximum contribution of €1.50 per student per year from the semester fee (Student Body share). A budget for this is set aside in the Student Body's financial plan. Once this budget has been exhausted, no further grants are possible in that fiscal year.
In addition, the Student Body also accepts anonymous donations for the Emergency Aid Fund budget.
How can I support the Emergency Aid Fund?
Financially, with a donation to the account of the Constituted Student Body with the payment reference "Spende Notlagenhilfe".
