Difficulties with your study plan? Financial or legal issues? Loneliness? Have you suffered discrimmination of any kind? Or do you just want a little guidance with everyday issues in a new country?
There are several contact points to help you out with any of your concerns provided by the student body, the Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe, and KIT. Here you find a first list of counceling services and general support for student concerns:
Counceling services from the Student Body (VS)
The student body has several structures of student committees representing your/our interests both at faculty level and KIT-wide AND organize events and other services on a voluntary basis.
AStA at KIT
The AStA is the general students committee of the student body. We work together with several employees with whom, among other stuff, we are able to offer several counceling services:
- The social counseling service is the point of contact for all questions relating to student financing, balancing work and study, housing situations, entitlement to social benefits and much more. You can reach the social counseling service at sozial@asta-kit.de or during their consultation hours on Wednessday from 11:00 to 13:00 and Fridays between 14:00-16:00.
- The lawyer information talk enables students to ask our lawyer questions about tenancy or financial law, as well as residence law, insurance and residence law. For this purpose, an information meeting takes place every Wednesday from 14:30. You can always register for these by 1 p.m. on Tuesday at rechtsberatung@asta-kit.de with your full name and address.
- You can ask your questions about studying with children, studying with disabilities, discrimination, sexism and sexual harassment at the Department for Equal Opportunities. You can reach the Equal Opportunities Advisory Service at chancengleichheit@asta-kit.de.
- The international Department is aimed at foreign students at KIT. Here you can ask all questions about studying, application and admission for international students or general concerns. You can reach the department at international@asta-kit.de.
Student Councils (de: Fachschaft)
Each degree program at KIT is assigned to one (or in a few special cases several) student council(s). All members of the student council are students themselves and are therefore usually best placed to help directly with problems relating to the degree program. The student council often al so organizes parties, the introductionary-phase for new students and offers protocol collections and learning aids. (DISCLAIMER: the website still has to be translated and some student councils' website sadly do not offer an english version yet. We are working on it. However, you are very wellcome to write us a mail.)
Studierendenwerk
The Studierendenwerk provides a wide variety of services for students. Among them are dining, housing, Bafög loans and several counceling services:
- The Beratungswerk - Information Center is the first point of contact for any concerns you may have. Whether it's about your exchange abroad, refugee counseling or studying with a child.
- The Psychological Counseling Service (PBS) offers counseling sessions, workshops, lectures and information material on mental health. Whether it's about exam anxiety or problems in your relationship. The PBS is also your point of contact for crisis interventions. You can reach the PBS from Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 12:00 at +497219334060.
KIT
The KIT also offers information and assistance for students.
- The Student Advisory Service is the first point of contact for all study-related questions and problems. If you have specific questions about your field of study, you can contact the Academic Advisors. The Career and Application Advice Service offers individual advice on CVs, applications and coaching.
- The International Student Office offers German courses (level A1-B2), a buddy program, workshops and activities for a good start to your studies in Karlsruhe and is generally a point of contact for people who have experienced racism.
