International Student Identity Card (ISIC)

The International Student Identity Card - ISIC for short - is the international ID for pupils and students from 12 years of age. The ISIC is valid for one year from the date of issue and costs €18.00.

How it works:

  • Fill out an application on site or bring the already completed application with you.

  • Present your certificate of enrollment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung) and your identity card.

  • Pay 18 euros.

  • You can complete your virtual ISIC card online with a passport photo.

  • A physical plastic card can be requested later online for an additional €5.

 

Who is eligible to purchase the ISIC? (As of: June 1st, 2022)

  • Students who are currently attending a public or private university with a minimum stay of 12 weeks and at least 15 hours per week.

  • Pupils who are attending a secondary school (Hauptschule, Realschule, Gymnasium, comprehensive school from the 5th grade onwards, commercial school or vocational school, private recognized training institution) in the current school year.

  • Persons who are in vocational training/apprenticeship and attending a vocational (technical) school.

  • Persons attending a language course with a minimum stay of 12 weeks and at least 15 hours per week.

 

Furthermore eligible are:

  • Students on leave of absence with a certificate of enrollment.

  • Students of a preparatory college (Studienkolleg) only with a certificate of enrollment.

  • Doctoral students only with a certificate of enrollment.

  • Trainee teachers / Referendars (part of a two-phase academic training).

  • All pupils and students who are 12 years or older can apply for the ISIC card if the other requirements are met.

 

Not eligible are:

Participants of an educational program that does not lead to a vocational qualification, such as:

  • Students of language courses with less than 12 weeks and at least 15 hours per week

  • Students of adult education centers (Volkshochschulen)

  • Graduates of a voluntary year (FSJ, FÖJ, etc.)

  • Volunteers and interns (unless they are students or pupils)

  • Au-pairs

 

Validity and Proof of Eligibility

The eligibility to receive the ISIC is valid from the date the training begins until the end of the calendar year in which the training is completed.

The provisions regarding the proof of eligibility apply to both German and foreign students, regardless of their place of study in Germany or abroad, provided that the certificate of study clearly shows that they are a full-time student.

 

Valid proofs of eligibility include:

  • A training contract that is currently dated and confirms training in accordance with the Vocational Training Act (Berufsbildungsgesetz).

  • A dated letter written on university or school letterhead with an official stamp confirming the status of a full-time student/pupil.
